The castles of the Loire
A ROUTE THROUGH SOME OF THE GORGEOUS CASTLES IN THE LOIRE VALLEY
The Loire Valley is the jewel of France, where French royalty chose to build some of their most emblematic castles. After visiting Chambord, we propose an itinerary through eight of these impressive castles, some of them declared World Heritage Sites.
For exclusive experiences, we organize on request private visits to the Chambord Castle and to different castles in the Loire Valley with our partner guides.
TWO MASTERPIECES
Just 20 minutes away from Relais de chambord:
CHÂTEAU DE CHEVERNY
Located between Blois and Chambord, this impressive castle is one of the most beautifully preserved in France and is worth a visit to admire its classical and Renaissance architecture, its sumptuous interiors and its enchanting gardens. In fact, the Château de Cheverny served as inspiration for Hergé, the author of Tintin.
CHÂTEAU ROYAL DE BLOIS
Located in the center of the city of Blois, this castle was declared a World Heritage Site in 2000. This remarkable structure includes four architectural styles with a 13th century medieval fortress, as well as Gothic, Renaissance and Classical wings.
SMALL CASTLES FULL OF CHARACTER
Other examples of magnificent castles, also 20 min away form the hotel are:
PARC ET CHÂTEAU DE BEAUREGARD
Steeped in history and featuring beautiful English-style gardens, this sophisticated chateau nestled in the heart of the Loire Valley is also a World Heritage Site. Its Renaissance architecture, museum and 40-acre landscaped park make this chateau the perfect choice for families to relax while enjoying the natural splendor of the region.
CHÂTEAU DE TALCY
If you have time, we suggest you visit this charming Renaissance castle. Perched north of the Loire River, explore some of its interior spaces, each carrying its own history.
BETWEEN CHAMBORD AND AMBOISE
Less than one hour away from Relais de Chambord:
DOMAINE DE CHAUMONT-SUR-LOIRE
From the exceptional panorama over the Loire, discover the turbulent history of this Renaissance-style château. The vast estate also houses stables, a park and a space for art and nature. It is especially known for its Garden Festival, an exhibition of contemporary gardens by new designers, held every year from April to October.
CHÂTEAU DE CHENONCEAU
A succession of women, including Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Medici, built this castle and its history, which is why it is also known as “Château des Dames”. Among all its beauty, its arches crossing the Cher river, its double gallery and its magnificent gardens, including a flower garden, deserve special mention.
IN AMBOISE
Following the footsteps of Leonardo da Vinci:
CHÂTEAU ROYAL D’AMBOISE
The Château d’Amboise, a former medieval fortress, became the residence of the kings of France during the Renaissance. Many European intellectuals and artists were guests there, such as Leonardo da Vinci, who now rests in its chapel. It overlooks the Loire and has a collection of extraordinary Gothic and Renaissance furniture.
CHÂTEAU DU CLOS LUCÉ – PARC LEONARDO DA VINCI
The former Amboise fortress became the summer residence of the kings of France after being acquired by Charles VIII. In addition, Francis I offered the castle to Leonardo da Vinci, who lived there for three years until his death in 1519. Today, the castle organizes guided visits to Leonardo’s gardens and his room, which features restored workshops and displays of his inventions.
